Green bond

LBBW frontrunner in sustainable refinancing

We increasingly aim for sustainability in our issuance business. To this end we are looking at international standards. As an issuer of green bonds, for example we commit ourselves to reinvest the proceeds in projects for renewable energies or energy efficient buildings. In doing so, we are today thinking of tomorrow: As early as 2017, we did pioneer work with our Green Senior Unsecured Bond.

For its green bond transaction based on commercial real estate, LBBW has obtained the certification by the Climate Bond Initiative (CBI) as the first European commercial bank for a green bond transaction based on commercial real estate. CBI is a non-profit organization that aims to increase awareness of the importance of green bonds in the international capital markets. The organization certifies green bonds that have been developed on the basis of the criteria of the Climate Bonds Standards.

6.4 bn €

is the volume of LBBW’s green bond portfolio

In addition, we received an award as “Best Green Bond Issuer Germany” from the business and finance magazine CFI.co (Capital Finance International).

In 2018 we managed to more than double the volume of green assets in the portfolio. LBBW included not only project financings but also energy efficient commercial real estate in Great Britain in its portfolio. The bank now has the second largest green bond portfolio in Germany – and will ensure even more sustainability in the future. Thus, we contribute to social responsibility.

We put our social responsibility into practice

In order to make the issue a success, LBBW commissioned the development of a simple methodology for the selection of "green assets" on the basis of official data from the German Energy Agency (dena) and the German Energy Saving Ordinance (EnEV). This can also be used by other market participants. At the same time, we reinvest the proceeds from our green bond in energy-efficient commercial properties – thereby ensuring even more sustainability in the future. This is how to put social responsibility into practice.
